Highly Commended - Life Change and Progression Award 2024

“In a world where challenges can often overshadow dreams, Lucy Willis’ journey stands as a testament to the power of resilience and determination.”  

So says Nikki Workman-Smith, Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) Family Learning Course Tutor, who nominated Lucy for an Inspire! Award.  

“From facing adversities early in life to emerging as a beacon of inspiration, Lucy’s story is one of unwavering perseverance and profound transformation,” she added.  

Leaving education at 15 and navigating parenthood whilst living in a hostel, Lucy took on a series of part-time jobs just to make ends meet, she struggled with anxiety and depression.  

The turning point came when she met Leanne Rutter, Family Liaison Officer at Bryn Hafod Primary School, Llanrumney.  

Leanne introduced Lucy to Family Learning and her confidence and motivation soared as she completed a series of courses. She secured a voluntary post as a Teaching Assistant in the school which has developed into a job as a Dinner Technician.  

Aiming to become a Teaching Assistant, she hopes to start a Level 3 Childcare course.  

“I always loved school, but when I fell pregnant, I was forced to leave and stopped my education,” said Lucy, “Over the last 20 years, my confidence in my own abilities – outside being a mum – massively diminished, so completing these courses has been transformative.  

“I feel proud of what I’ve achieved. It’s boosted my self-esteem and focus – and most importantly has given me new friends. For the first time in years, I’m socialising and enjoying my life. I’ve got a passport; I’m helping to run a book club and I’m part of the new school Parent Teacher Association. It feels like my life has started.”  

Lucy described the Family Learning programme as a “guiding light” and a “lifeline”, offering a glimmer of hope to those lost and unsure of a future for themselves.  

“With each course, I shed a layer of doubt and insecurity, emerging stronger and more self-assured.  

“To anyone who is stuck in a rut or struggling at the moment, I offer these words of encouragement: ‘You are not alone. With the right support and determination, even the darkest of nights can give way to the dawn of a new day. Trust in the journey, embrace the opportunities that come your way and never underestimate the resilience of the human spirit.”
